After dinner we had to kill some time before the show that was said to start 1am at Razzmatazz in an area called Poble Nou, a club that used to be a factory. It has about 6 different rooms to dance or play a show, each one a different kind of music. For example, in one room you might hear house, and another room rock. The biggest room plays "indie dancy" remixes like White Lies, Placebo, Editors, The Killers, Muse, etc. I talked my friends into coming to see the show, 15 euros each, and nobody in the entire club seemed to know if the band was coming or not...in fact none of the staff even knew who they were! It suddenly occurred to us, since The Joy Formidable is from North Whales, that they must have gotten stuck at home since all flights are canceled the UK due to the volcano that erupted in Iceland. One bartender told us that if they DO show up it wouldn't be any earlier than 3 am, and proceeded to show us a list of the bands who were going to play that night. The Joy was NOT on the list. We kept a positive attitude and decided, "well, were here at a club so lets just go dance and see what happens". It's been a while that I went dancing at a club, and since we had about 2 hours to wait around I did a great deal of observing the crowd. Last night was the first time in my life when I asked myself "Umm, am I older than everyone here!?" Since Razz is such a big club, most of the people there had no idea that there was even going to be a concert, they were just there to dance. Out of the 4000 people there the average age was about 20.
By 2:50am a few friends had left, tired of waiting, and the leftover people + my boyfriend and I decided to take a look around the the gigantic club. All of a sudden we heard a very familiar song playing in the BIG room, we ran back down the stairs to where we had been all night and there they were! Not only had they made it to Barcelona but they played one kick ass show. The lead singer called "Ritzy" had a killer energy up on stage, and transmitted it straight to the crowd. The coolest thing was that most of the people in the crowd didn't even know who this surprise band was at 3am and were suddenly flipping asking the obvious fans in front "WHO IS THIS BAND? Where are they from?!"
I have a good feeling that this band made a ton of new fans last night.
